When you go to a museum, you can usually find volunteers called "docents" (from the Latin
docere, "to teach") who hand out informational booklets, give tours and answer questions.
The Las Vegas based Erotic Heritage Museum, in cooperation with the American College of Sexologists, has announced a new 12-week training program for docents there.
"People want to know about our erotic heritage," said Dr. Ted McIlvenna, the museum's curator.
The training program is free, and offered in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, faculty and students from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and erotic artists from Las Vegas. There is no charge for the course, but graduates are asked to donate 40 hours of time as docents at the museum, after which they may apply for the several positions available as paid part-time docents at the museum.
At completion of the 12-hour course, a certification by the American College of Sexologists as an erotological docent will be awarded. The course is also good for one academic unit for active students.
The Erotic Heritage Museum is located at 3275 Industrial Road in Las Vegas, behind the Fashion Show mall, between the Strip and I-15. For more information, call Laura Henkel at (702) 369-6442.
