Porn movies were different from the bang-bang-bang videos people are familiar with now. They were movies, with plots and cinematography and acting and, yes, a little sex.

One of the better practitioners of the filmmaking art was Henri Pachard, the veteran director who died recently. He started in the '70s and made some excellent movies back in the day, and this Saturday, the New Beverly is showing one of them at a midnight show as a tribute.

Pachard's 1984 Pussycat Galore is the film that will be shown. It stars Brooke Fields, Danielle, Honey Wilder, Rene Summers, Annette Heinz, Chelsea Blake, Carol Cross, Cassandra Leigh, Joey Silvera, Jerry Butler, Paul Thomas, George Payne, Bobby Astyr, Klaus Multia and David Scott. Silvera and Thomas are still active in the adult industry today as directors — Pachard was actively directing until about a year ago — and Astyr, Payne and Butler were fine actors who also were sex perfomers.

Also on the bill is 1977's Eruption, the variation on Double Indemnity starring John C. Holmes that ran a few weeks ago after the signing of the John C. Holmes biography.

The New Beverly is at 7165 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. Parking is available on the streets and as a longtime habitué of the place, let me clue you to something: If you leave by the doors at the back of the house they empty right on the alley and it saves you five minutes walking back to your car.
